What makes up the cost?
- Frames and assemblies. Profile system, dimensions, opening arrangement, finish and hardware specification.
- Insulating glass units. Glass make-up, thickness and processing, coatings, lamination where required, and spacers.
- Installation junctions. Supports, interfaces, thermal insulation, water and vapour protection, and drainage.
- Delivery and installation. Transport route, access to openings, lifting, equipment and installation sequence.
- Additional work. Removal, base preparation, finishes or work by other trades only where explicitly included in the agreed scope.
A quotation should state the included work and exclusions, not just a total. Taxes, currency, price validity and payment terms need to be specified in the individual proposal.
Why a price per square metre is not the whole story
A fixed pane and a sliding vent of equal area have different components. The number of opening elements, glass weight, threshold requirements, finish and installation access also affect the budget.
A square-metre rate is useful for comparison only when its scope is clear. It does not replace a quotation for your drawings.

How to compare two quotations
- Match dimensions, element quantities and opening arrangements.
- Check the exact system, glass make-up, coatings and hardware.
- Clarify the installation scope: supports, insulation, drainage, delivery and lifting.
- Compare inclusions, exclusions, taxes and payment terms separately.
- Agree which properties and documents substantiate the proposed specification.
Adjust the budget by comparing clear alternatives, such as the number of opening elements, the arrangement or finish. Required supports, fixings or safety glazing should not be removed simply to reduce the total.
What to send for an initial estimate
- Elevations, a window schedule or sketches with opening dimensions.
- Project location, building type and construction stage.
- Preferred opening arrangements, colour and threshold requirements.
- Photographs of access, openings and the installation area if the building exists.
- Requirements for thermal comfort, solar control, acoustics and safety.
- A target budget and preferred programme, if defined.
If some information is unavailable, mention that in your enquiry. An initial comparison does not replace the final specification following verification of dimensions and junctions.
Budget questions
Why is there no universal price list here?
A number without dimensions, specification and installation conditions can create misleading expectations. Meaningful comparison requires a defined specification and agreed scope of work.
Is the more expensive system always better for my house?
No. Its capabilities need to match the opening, loads, architecture and intended use. Additional specification does not necessarily provide a benefit in every project.
Are delivery and installation included?
Check each quotation. They should be explicitly included or itemised separately, together with lifting and other necessary work.
